UniBo Motorsport’s Athena wins Formula Student Spain 2024 competition

UniBo Motorsport, representing the University of Bologna, has achieved a historic first place at the Formula Student Spain 2024, held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in early August.
Competing against 25 university teams from around the world, including Europe, Canada and Indonesia, UniBo’s electric prototype, Athena, secured first place overall thanks to its exceptional reliability and performance.

“Athena may not have been the fastest, but it was certainly the most reliable, and that’s what brought us victory,”

said Riccardo Lutti, UniBo Motorsport team manager.

The competition consisted of several stages, starting with static events where the teams presented their design, costing and business plans to the judges. Athena passed all the technical tests, which are essential to ensure compliance with the strict rules of the competition. The dynamic events tested the car’s performance on the track, including acceleration, skidpad, autocross and endurance.

UniBo Motorsport finished sixth and seventh in Acceleration and Skidpad respectively, but really shone in the Autocross, finishing second, and dominated the Endurance, finishing first in the 23 kilometre challenge.

This consistency across the events secured Athena first place overall, a significant achievement for the team, especially after the challenges of previous years.

“This is our first win and it’s incredibly satisfying after five years of setbacks. Last year, despite having a great design, we couldn’t even compete due to some technical problems. To win this year, especially with a smaller budget compared to our competitors, feels like a dream come true”

added Lutti

The UniBo Motorsport team is now preparing for its next challenge in the Formula ATA, which will be held at the Varano de’ Melegari circuit from 3-8 September.
